Nursery worker slammed for ‘snide’ remark made to doctor picking up her son

A dad has slammed a member of staff at his son’s nursery for making a ‘snide’ comment to his wife when she collected their child.

The couple have two children, one of which is nursery age, and the husband explains he has always taken care of the school runs as he works a ‘typical 9-5’ whereas his wife is a doctor, working extremely long hours with little time off.

Their three-year-old son has still been attending nursery during the coronavirus pandemic due to work commitments, with the dad dropping him off and picking him up each day.

Recently, as he prepared to leave to collect their son, his wife chose to do it instead as she was off work and was excited at the rare opportunity.

The dad says staff at the nursery and other parents know his wife, despite her not being able to the school run very often, but she returned in floods of tears.

She said a new nursery worker hadn’t believed his wife was their son’s mother as she had never seen her before and didn’t feel comfortable letting him leave with someone she didn’t know.

Other members of staff informed her that the woman was the boy’s mother multiple times and, despite protesting, she eventually agreed to let the boy go home with her.

However, as the mum was leaving the worker made an angry comment which left her devastated and her husband fuming with anger.

His wife said the member of staff had added: “Maybe if you were here more often, I wouldn’t have to verify your identity.”

The mum was devastated and her husband decided to take action despite his partner saying she just wanted to ‘forget it happened’.

He wrote on Reddit: “I am very angry so the next day I picked up my son and asked to speak the woman in charge about the new worker.

“She wasn’t there when it happened but I complained and said that how my wife was treated was ridiculous and that the coworker was out of line for her snide comment at the end.

“The woman wasn’t happy and I’ve now learnt the new worker has been given a severe warning and that her behaviour is being watched.”

His wife was annoyed with his decision and it also split opinion with other parents at the nursery, with some saying he was right to complain while others criticised him for interferring.

Advice for parents

The dad asked for advice as to who had been in the wrong, and one replied: “The new employee wasn’t an a** until that last comment, but that was so uncalled for. How dare she shame your wife for being a working mom, especially during a pandemic!

“I appreciate the employee’s attempt to protect your son, in a different situation we’d be thanking god for people like her, but being proven wrong doesn’t give her the right to be a d*** to your wife.”

Another said he was right to stand up for her, writing: “Too many people shaming working mothers.”
